An Important Message to Our Community

Over seven and a half years ago, Inspire Community Café began with a dream.

We imagined a place where people from different backgrounds could gather around a table, enjoy nourishing food, build meaningful relationships, and work together toward a more just, compassionate, and connected Memphis. We also wanted to provide affordable, life-giving food and create living-wage jobs where team members could develop skills, grow as leaders, and discover new possibilities for their futures.

What began as a dream became something far greater than we ever imagined because of you.

In our very first year—before the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world—you welcomed Inspire with open arms. The support of our community was overwhelming. We were honored to be voted among Memphis' top 5 new restaurants, and every day our dining room was filled with conversations, friendships, collaboration, and hope.

Then came the pandemic.

Like so many restaurants and small businesses, we faced challenges we never could have anticipated. Through creativity, perseverance, sacrifice, and an incredible amount of community support, we made it through. Since then, we have worked hard to rebuild and sustain the café we love.

The hard reality is that the steadily rising costs of food, utilities, insurance, and operating a restaurant have created a daily uphill battle for a little restaurant like ours. As we faced the upcoming end of our lease, we reflected and discussed (and reflected and discussed), and we collectively made the difficult decision to bring this chapter to an end.

While it is sad to bring something we love to a close, we are excited about the next chapter of life, and we are deeply grateful for all that this journey has been.

We know that we are not alone in facing the challenges of keeping a small business going in these times. Independent restaurants across Memphis and around the country have been navigating a difficult economic landscape. Many beloved local establishments have faced similar decisions. While these realities have shaped our path, they do not diminish what Inspire has accomplished. We are proud of what was built here, grateful for the lives touched along the way, and thankful for every person who helped make this journey possible.

Over the past seven and a half years, Inspire has been so much more than a café. It has been a place where friendships were formed, ideas were born, collaborations were launched, celebrations were shared, and countless cups of coffee fueled meaningful conversations. Together, we have served delicious and healthy food to thousands of people. We have created jobs that helped team members gain skills, confidence, experience, and lasting relationships. We have welcomed neighbors, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, students, families, nonprofits, churches, and community leaders through our doors.

Most importantly, we have witnessed the power of community.

While Inspire's chapter as a café is coming to an end, the relationships, lessons, and impact created here will continue long after the doors close.

Join Us for a Final Celebration

We would love to gather one more time with the community that made Inspire possible. Please join us on Saturday, June 27, 1:30-3 pm, for cake and a celebration of gratitude, storytelling, and connection (café will be open for regular service 8:30 am-1:30 pm). 

Supporting Our Team

As we prepare for this transition, one of our greatest concerns is caring well for the incredible staff members who have poured their hearts into Inspire.

Many of our team members have devoted years of service to this community. They have welcomed guests, prepared meals, built relationships, and helped create the culture that made Inspire special. For those who would like to help, we are establishing a transition fund to provide financial support for our staff as they navigate their next steps (see Venmo link below). Contributions will help create a cushion during this period of change and will be distributed directly to our team members, according to length of employment.

Thank you for every meal shared, every conversation held, every event attended, every encouraging word, every catering order placed, every partnership, and every act of support. Thank you for believing in the vision of a café that sought to nourish both people and community.

Though this phase of our journey is ending, we remain hopeful about what comes next. The values that inspired Inspire --connection, compassion, justice, hospitality, and belonging -- do not end with the closing of a restaurant. They continue through the lives of the people who have been part of this story.

And what a beautiful story it has been.
